The Messenger

Socrates already noticed that not even artists are all that smart.

He pretended to be surprised by this insight, since artists knew how to produce such wonderful works.

Although he must have known that the greatness of a work of art didn’t spring from the artist’s brain, but was a message from the gods, what we would now call a message from the unconscious.

The artist is merely the bearer of the message and doesn’t need to know any more about the meaning of his works than the mailman about his mail.
